Introduction
Mulled wine, a classic warm beverage enjoyed during the colder months, dates back to the 2nd century when the Romans would heat wine to guard against the winter chill. Its name comes from the Old English word “mullen”, meaning to heat or sweeten. Traditionally, it features a base of red wine infused with various spices like cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg, sweetened with a touch of sugar or honey, and often garnished with slices of citrus fruit. The result is a fragrant, spicy, and slightly sweet drink that’s perfect for festive celebrations and cozy nights by the fire.
